Written by President Kitty Chan, Rotary Club of New Territories

As a remembrance of those good old days at the university, the author was a Rotatactor at that time.  We participated in many service projects to contribute to our community.  We still keep in touch with one another up till now, and we are still maintaining this deep and everlasting friendship.

Rotaract Club / Interact Club

Rotaract is a member of the Rotary International.  It is a service Club consisting of young people who are dedicated to making friends from around the world and developing their leadership skills while serving their communities. [1]  Whereas Interact Club also enables young people to participate in service projects, and to understand the local as well as the world’s most pressing challenges.[2]  Under the sponsorship of a Rotary Club (we call it a mother Club), Rotaract Club and Interact Club provides their members the opportunity to learn which opens up their horizons.  For instance, they can collaborate with Rotaract Clubs or Interact Clubs in another school; join the projects organized by their mother Club, etc.  From a global perspective, many countries have established Rotaract Clubs or Interact Clubs.  Please refer to the following table for details.

Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs under the Rotary Club of New Territories

At the beginning of this Rotary year, we promised to strengthen the mentorship and connection with our Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs.  We also wished to arrange regular meetings with our Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs so that we three parties could have more fellowships and collaborations.  Indeed it comes to reality that we can always meet and discuss our plans on projects and development in this Rotary year.

This Rotary year, President and advisors of RCNT physically attended and supported all levels of activities arranged by our Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs.  For example, we joined their inauguration ceremonies, recruitment meeting of their executive committees, and fellowship dinners.  We also talked to the school Principal and their teacher advisors to understand their service mission and vision in this Rotary year.  At the same token, our Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs also actively participated in various types of fellowships and service projects at both the Rotary International District 3450 and RCNT levels.  For instance, the District End Polio Walk[5], Hong Kong Blind Bowling Tournament, the Spring Walk during the Chinese New Year.  During the Installation of RCNT, Rotaractors also helped serving our guests during the ceremony.  We learned from and supported each other, which echoes this year’s theme of “More than just a rebond” by RACCC and “Inherit the past, Usher in the future” by RAC NT.  These two themes mean that we should have a common goal of achievements, connecting each other, learning from your past and heritage while giving innovations and new elements so that the projects can be kept up with the times.  “Bonding” is a close tie in which the relationship with our family and friends is a good example.  We always look forward to an intimate and trusting Rotary bonding, and expecting more communication with our Rotaract Clubs.  By making use of each of our own strengths, we can inject positivity and work further for our community.

[5] End Polio Walk is a big and significant event in each Rotary year.  Ending polio is one of the most salient areas of concern of the Rotary International. The event does not only promote the work of the Rotary International in fighting against the disease, they also wish to raise our awareness and support to what Rotary International has done in tackling this issue.  RCNT and Rotaract Clubs had sent representatives to attend this year’s End Polio Walk Opening Ceremony in which we saw a lot of support for this event.

RCNT led our two Rotaract Clubs to visit Caritas Lok Yi School in July 2022, in which this school is a special school taking care of the mentally handicapped.  We went there to understand the educational needs of these students.  After the visit, the Rotaractors expressed that they would like to explore more projects to help those in need in our society.  At the same time RCNT had some project plans in hand which required the support and participation of our Rotaractors.  It was after this school visit, we used our “Imagine Rotary” creativity to start our discussion and explore what we should do next.  We began to find out how to set our target effectively and implement quality projects.  Through this kind of visit, the Rotaractors are not just learning how to design the projects and collaborating with one another, but they are also contributing.  This satisfies mutually complementary goals.

The Charter President of the Rotary Club of Metropolitan organized a Hong Kong Branding Expo at the AsiaWorld Expo in end-October 2022.  RAC NT had setup a booth in this Expo for 3 days.  Other than demonstrating and promoting past service projects they have accomplished, the Rotaractors also sold some apparel items with the York brand name which was owned by our senior Rotarian CHOW Wah-cheuck, as well as the facial masks manufactured by our District Secretary Joseph YIM.  While our Rotaractors were learning how to manage a small business on one hand, they were also helping their Club to raise fund on the other.  The Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Dr. Bernard CHAN, also took the opportunity to talk to our Rotaractors and understand their service mission and goals in this Rotary year.  RAC NT manned the booth and produced a backdrop with creative design on their own, which made the whole event a very fruitful one.

We are going to launch an online youth international exchange with our sister’s club, the Rotary Club of Singapore East, through a programme called the Virtual Vocational Exchange (VVE).  VVE seeks to benefit young working individuals through cross-country boundary online exchanges which encompasses enrichment of their vocational horizons and cultural understanding.  We have already started the preparation of VVE and some of our Rotaractors will serve as participants in this programme, which actualizes the impact and importance of our Rotary focus on international services.

Over the past years, South Tuen Mun Government Secondary School (STMGSS) had been our “Adopt A School” partner.  Under the sponsorship of RCNT, STMGSS officially set up an Interact Club and had the first Installation Ceremony on 11 November 2022.  Under the leadership of Principal Chin, STMGSS always supported the flagship activities of Rotary International District 3450, including the Peace Camp, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)[6].  STMGSS also became a Peace School in 2022-23 which helps to promote world peace and harmony.  Principal Chin of STMGSS attended the Opening Ceremony of the Peace School Programme in person on 11 November 2022 afternoon at Ocean Park to show his support to the United Nation’s goal of sustainability – Building Peace.  All of the above examples show how an Interact Club can provide such diverse opportunities for young people to learn, to experience and to serve.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is one of the main themes in this Rotary year.  Our Rotary Club and Interact Clubs have many collaborations on this topic. STMGSS Interact Club had conducted an online cultural exchange with the Interact Club in Sri Lanka on 25 November 2022, with full support and commendation from Rotary International District 3450 and District 3220. While STMGSS Interactors introduced the local cultures in Hong Kong, the Interactors from Sri Lanka also shared their local popular sports activities.  Although there was travel restriction and they could not meet face to face at that time due to the pandemic, there was no barrier for them to communicate and do exchanges in respect of knowledge and cultural sharing.  Apart from that, STMGSS Interactors had set up a booth to promote DEI during the Rotary Service Day cum Rotary Hong Kong UltraMarathon on the New Year Eve last year.  Besides, two Interactors from their Club were elected to serve as the Chair for District International Understanding on the District Interact level in this Rotary year.

[6] Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive leadership training which helps the young people to acquire necessary leadership skills. It also provides an interesting platform for building social networks and connections.

During the Chinese New Year, STMGSS organized a Chinese Traditional Art Gala Performance Opening cum Lucky Bag Donation to the Elderly.  At the Gala Performance, apart from the traditional eye-dotting ceremony to kick off a ceremonial lion dance, there were also Chinese Opera performances and distribution of lucky bags to the elderlies living in Tuen Mun district.  This event enabled the three generations to celebrate the festival together.  In addition, the Hong Kong Outstanding Young Person as well as a famous qipao designer, Ms Mary YU, delivered a qipao design course to the Interactors earlier on.  During the course, Mary taught the students some design techniques so that each group designed their own unique qipao style by themselves.  Their qipao will be displayed during their school’s Open Day and Chinese Cultural Week as a means to promote Chinese art and tradition.

Rotarians and Rotaractors Explore the RCNT Icon – The Tai Mo Shan Rotary Park

RCNT has many old stories with Tai Mo Shan Country Park, especially the Tai Mo Shan Rotary Park, in our club history.  Tai Mo Shan Rotary Park is considered an important icon of RCNT.  A statue commemorating the 50th anniversary of our Club was erected in the Park in 2019.  Our Rotarians always visit the Park or do hiking with their family and friends.  RCNT also arranges different activities at the Park on a regular basis, such as the Spring Walk and ecological tours.

To mark the beginning of a new year, the Spring Walk was our regular annual fellowship event with the Rotaractors.  Apart from hiking at the Rotary Park to enjoy the scenery and explore the natural ecology, this is a healthy activity which enables us to get together and spend some leisure time with the Rotaractors.  Besides, visiting Madam LIN, who is the tuck shop owner at Tai Mo Shan, is a must-do in our itinerary when we go to Tai Mo Shan Rotary Park.  Not only can we take a break after the walk and taste the delicious canapés and soybean pudding with our Rotaractors at the tuck shop, we can take this opportunity to update each other the progress of the service projects and our club affairs.

Rotary Clubs carry a duty to nurture our young generation through different spectrums of activities so that they can become responsible and good citizens who are willing to contribute to our society.  Meanwhile, Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs also provide a very suitable platform for youngsters to give full play to their potentials and for networking purpose.  Young people are important drives of our community and they are our future pillars.  With the powerful training atmosphere of the Rotaract Clubs and Interact Clubs, many of them can become elite and role models.  Secondly, the friendship they built therein are lifelong and precious.  If young people can possess a wide global perspective, a humble learning attitude, a spirit of service above self, and a sense of creative talent, they can certainly grasp the chance to grow and enjoy the pleasure of improving their strengths and capabilities.  Therefore, I sincerely hope that the Rotary, Rotaract and Interact can collaborate with one another and have the team spirit to walk hand in hand to better serve our community.

A harmonious society is built on love and care, it also depends on our solidarity and unity.  I sincerely wish our Rotary, Rotaract and Interact family a prosperous year ahead.  Let’s inherit the past and usher in the future.  I always believe in “out with the old, in with the new”, and only if the achievements of our young generation surpasses ours can make our community progresses further.  We three parties should fully utilize our own advantages and set more ambitious goals in helping those disadvantaged groups in our society.
